What is the difference between SSI and SSDI?

Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) is a program based on money you have contributed through your job history. It is money that has been withheld as FICA taxes based on your wages earned. If you have earned enough work credits you become insured for a disability benefit. The amount of your benefit depends on how much you earned and how much was paid into Social Security.

Supplemental Security Income (SSI) pays monthly benefits to people with disabilities who have low income and limited assets. For example, you cannot collect SSI if your assets exceed $2,000 for a single person or $3,000 for a couple. Keep in mind this does not include your house or your car. We can help you make the determination.

What are steps I can take to improve the chances of winning an award?

Your best chance of winning is to seek the assistance of an attorney. However, if your case is denied, you should appeal right away. Also, try to obtain as many of your medical records as possible. If Social Security collects your records, they may not get all of them so they may not have all the facts to make the right determination.

Sometimes a combination of medical problems can be disabling. Be sure to let your doctor know all of your physical and psychological conditions in detail so they can be documented and treated.
